The last few days have been beautifully warm and sunny but autumn is here and so my arrangement celebrates the wonderful hues of this season. I used my nice little brown jug which is a Pearsons of Chesterfield jug, it reminds me of a shiny brown conker.
Zinnias go on and on both in the garden and in a vase.
The leaves are heuchera, Spiraea japonica ‘Goldflame’ and an orange coleus. The berries are unripe skimmia ones. The green hops on the left appear everywhere in my garden and are a bit of a nuisance but still I allow one or two to climb trees.
I have used one rose on the centre of the arrangement and that is the peerless apricot coloured ‘Grace’.
I have used two different nicotiana flowers. The beautiful Nicotiana mutabilis grows very tall and the blooms start off green and then turn pink.
I have also used Nicotiana alata ‘Limegreen’ as I love green flowers.
For orange flower power I have used a spray from one of my crocosmia seedlings and the bright orange Dahlia coccinea which is a species dahlia from Mexico with single flowers. It is not supposed to be hardy but mine has survived outside for several years.
The shiny, satiny flowers are Hesperantha coccinea ‘Major’. We are not allowed to call it schizostylis any more. I’m quite glad about that because I could never remember how to spell it.
As usual thanks to my friend Cathy at Ramblinginthegarden for hosting the meme. Do pop over and see her lovely dahlias and all the other beautiful monday vases.
This is a stunning arrangement, Chloris. It says ‘autumn’ beautifully, and is reminiscent of the della robbia style. Gorgeous!
Thank you Eliza it is a wonderful time of year, I love these sunset shades.
Yummy colors. I love that you captured the tiny yellow curlicues topping the zinna in photo 2…so amazing!
I love these colours. Aren’t the zinnias fantastic with their little punk hairdos?
I adore this arrangement. The colours are wonderful together, it looks like a beautiful oil painting. Some very beautiful flowers. I’m annoyed about the schizostylis as I’ve just got the hang of the name though I still can’t spell it either.
Thank you Alison. I love these colours too. Hesperantha is easier to spell so that’s some consolation. The change I resent is symphyotrichum instead of aster.
Absolutely beautiful. A Dutch still life masterpiece if ever I saw one!
Thank you Allison. Wouldn’t it be fun to reproduce an old Dutch master with fresh flowers? I’ve often thought that I would like to try it.
What a beautiful arrangement, the colours certainly glow. Just lovely, I’d buy that! xxx
Thank you Dina, the colours just suited my mood today.
The colors of this autumn vase are spectacular….I absolutely love its fall colors and textures!
Thank you, I love these autumn colours too.
what a glorious collection of autumn colors your assembled! I wish I could get some of the pretty Heuchera foliage to survive here – just one heatwave and it burns to a crisp!
But then you have leucodendron you lucky girl, it sets off your arrangemenrs beautifully.
Sumptuous. That’s all I have to say!
Thank you Sam.
Oh my – a lovely rendition of fall, should be preserved in a a painting. Now, what is a shiny brown conker?
Thank you Amy. Conkers are the fruit of the horse chestnut tree, Aesculus hippocastrum. They are like shiny round chestnuts and are much prized by children.
Interesting, my husband is from the State of Ohio -the Buckeye State. The Buckeye tree is Aesculus glabra, similar nuts and considered a good luck talisman.
A conker is the individual ‘seed’ from inside a horse chestnut fruit, distinctively shiny and ‘chesthut’ brown and very tactile
We have similar nuts here! Buckeyes.
Oops – your reply was posted as I posted mine! Didn’t mean to duplicate it 😉 ( and of course it was meant to say ‘chestnut’ not ‘chesthut’, whatever that is!)
Your vase has such an autumnal glow to it, with the leaves of the heuchera and spiraea a brilliant foli for the berries, russet zinnia (very nice), pretty rose and the easily spelt hesperantha – they all look so at ease with each other. Thanks for sharing, Chloris
Thank you Cathy, I was trying to create a real autumnal feel. Perversely, now it really is autumn I just want to bring back summer. Next week I shall probably go pink.
hi Chloris. Flower arranging is not something I can do. But yours look fantastic!
Thank you Steve, I can’t do flower arranging either, I just plonk them in a vase. But I do like bringing a bit of the garden into the house.
Rich, beautiful autumnal arrangement. Gorgeous! Gorgeous!
Thank Susie, that is a real compliment coming from you, you are so artistic.
What a luscious blending of flowers, foliage, and berries – so perfect in the brown jug too. I love the Skimmia berries and am most grateful for the heads-up on Hesperantha! 😉 Sorry I missed this month’s Ten Favorites but was away just before and missed quite a bit!
That little brown jug really comes into its own for autumn arrangements. I love it. I hope yoy’ve been somewhere nice.
It’s beautiful! I always enjoy berries and colorful foliage in arrangements, this one is no exception. It seems like a creation one would find in a fancy, popular horticultural magazine. Fabulous!
Thank you Beth, I love all these sunset shades and they are just right for autumn.
Definitely one of the finest autumn arrangements I have ever seen! You’ve got all the ingredients – berries, hops, foliage and flowers, I especially love the clever lime highlights from the Nicotiana. 🙂
Thank you Cathy, what a lovely thing to say. Autumn colours are so beautiful.
Wow! What a beautiful combination of autumn tints. I can easily imagine your vase being the feature cover of an October magazine. Everything works perfectly together. Is the Zinnia a single variety or was it from a mix?
Thank you Christina. I am a bit baffled by this zinnia. I grew Zinnia elegans ‘ Red Lime’ but I got quite a variation from one packet. But I’m not complaining, they are all lovely.
So much autumn in one vase!Beautiful!
Thank you Anca. Yes, autumn is here now so we might as well celebrate it with autumnal vases.
What a gorgeous fall selection!
Thank you. And now it is October and really autumn I am looking for summer colours. My next vase will probably be pink.
Beautifully rich arrangement. I can’t say I’m a big fan of autumn colors but yours go so well together and it really does have an antique look to it. I’m always amazed by what you all grow and the restraint you show when putting it all together. Is that hops? I bet you could have filled a huge vase with just that one thing!
Thank you Frank. Think of them as sunset colours rather than autumn ones. Actually I don’t show a lot of restraint and if I do it is because I really don’t like picking things and leaving holes in my carefully orchestrated displays in the garden.
Another stunning arrangement and I can just imagine all the wonderful blooms you left behind in the garden.
Thank you Gill, I am not very good at restraint, I don’t do minimal. But on the other hand I am always reluctant to make holes in my flower beds.
One of the most beautiful autumn arrangements I’ve ever seen, Chloris. You have a fabulous talent.
What a lovely thing to say, thank you very much dear Cynthia.
You’re very welcome.
Glorious! I agree with the others, you do have a fabulous talent! This arrangement is reminiscent of a masterful still life painting!
Thank you Peter. I have thought that it would be fun to try to recreate a Dutch master with flowers. But they often used flowers from different seasons. But maybe next June when there is an abundance of blooms I will give it a try.
